Martin Maguire a trustee for 2 years has lived by the estuary for nearly 30 years. Martins interests are in water quality both of the waterways that feed the estuary and the estuary itself, the birdlife that visits the estuary, and the food chain that sustains the wildlife in the area. As a former recreational user of the estuary Martin believes there needs to be a balance between recreation use, and, the retention and maintenance of the biodiversity of the area.

Alisdair Hutchison

Islay graduated with a PhD in Zoology from the University of London in 1975 and is an Associate Professor of Marine Biology in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury. She has supervised numerous student theses on the ecology of the Avon-Heathote Estuary. Her 80 scientific publications focus on estuarine ecology, sand-beach ecology shellfish biology and the effects of stress and contaminants on molluscs and crustaceans. She is also involved with management of marine resources in the Canterbury area and the protection and restoration of threatened marine habitats. She is on the editorial board of three international journals.

Islay Marsden

A founding trustee. Now the Christchurch City Council appointee to the Trust. Previously a member of the Christchurch Estuary Association and the Friends of the Avon Heathcote Estuary. A member of Travis Wetland Trust and previously on the Bexley Wetland Trust. Involved in the wastewater working party from 1996. I am involved in the Trust because I value how it brings together people in our community who want to improve the ecological health of the Estuary and to protect it from development and for passive recreation. My particular interests currently are in education and research, with a focus on encouraging researchers from different organisations working more closely with each other.

Chrissie Williams

Trustee since: 2007. Previously the Canterbury Regional Council appointee to the Trust and Chair of the Regional Coastal Portfolio Committee at Environment Canterbury. I value the estuary as a major influence on the social, cultural, environmental, and economic components of our city and indeed our region. The work of the Ihutai Trust is crucial for the improved ecological health of this essential artery. As a voluntary defender of the environment, the Ihutai Trust works professionally, and I am privileged to be associated with them.

David Sutherland

I've been a trustee since 2005. I am a marine ecologist by training and have worked in both environmental protection and coastal planning in Australia for many years before returning to NZ in 2004. I am involved as a trustee because I would like to help protect and enhance the special ecological and recreational values the estuary holds. Ihutai is a hugely unsung natural asset for the people of Christchurch.

Karen Banwell

Martin Ward has been a trustee since the Ihutai Trust's establishment. He has been involved in impact assessment since 1974, when he joined The Commission for the Environment. He has been involved in writing, auditing and reviewing impact assessments and is currently working with Health Impact Assessment and sustainability appraisal. As a hobby ornithologist, Martin is passionate about the environment we live in and is committed to using his skills in improving it for our future generations. The Estuary takes high priority in this work.

Martin Ward

A trustee since 2009, Roy is a Senior Lecturer in the Environmental Management Department at Lincoln University and holds an MSc in Resource Management from the University of Canterbury. Roy has a broad interest in environmental issues in particular urban planning, heritage conservation and environmental history. He spent much of his childhood on the banks of the Avon River in the Avonside/Richmond area and he has recently taken up a roost overlooking the Ferrymead meander of the Heathcote River.

Roy Montgomery

Ruth Dyson has been a trustee since the Ihutai Trust's establishment. She was involved in the discussions with the community groups working on various aspects of the Estuary's future health and was a strong advocate for the establishment of a single entity (eg the Trust) to unite these passions and forces. She has been the Member of Parliament for this area for 15 years and is committed to working as the central government representative with the community and with the City and Regional Councils to continue to improve the health of the Estuary and the surrounding environs.
